Vata & the Subdoshas 💨

This week we are talking all about Vata! It is Vata season , which means it is mostly cold, dry and mobile (wind) in the weather patterns. It is important to keep this dosha in balance and in its proper seat to avoid production and accumulation of toxins. Vata dosha is a combination of the air and ether elements. This represents action, movement and transportation. The qualities of Vata are dry, light, cold, rough, subtle and mobile. Vata is in our movements, actions, breathing, speech, detox, heart pumping and sense of touch. It is the kindler of digestive fire, opener of cell walls and channels, and develops and delivers babies. The seat of Vata is in the abdominal cavity bellow the belly button in the large intestine and colon. It is also in the pelvis, thighs, skin, ears, bones, heart, brain, nervous system and lungs. Each dosha (Vata, Pitta & Kapha) all have 5 subdoshas that exist. Each of these subdoshas represents the five elements (ether, air, fire, water, earth) that tie...

Winter Essential Herbs

Why herbs? Herbs are an integral part in our Ayurvedic practice.  They are powerful tools that help with healing the mind and addressing emotions .  They have the ability to make us more open to change, calm anger and create better quality communication.  Herbs aid the body in healing the root causes of symptoms, and are a holistic and natural healing way to enhance the body’s natural functions. There are many ways to consume herbs: in tea, with ghee and honey, in pill form or just with water.    As the seasons change from Autumn ( Vata ) to Winter ( Vata  and  Kapha ), consider adding these herbs into your life.    Which herbs? Amla  (Indian Gooseberry) Amla  is derived from the tree Amalaki, which originates from the foothills of the Himalayas. Amla is beneficial for the Winter season due to its stable and high Vitamin C content, and is a natural antioxidant and anti inflammatory. 1-2 grams of  Amla ...

Welcoming Winter ❄⛄

As we celebrate the  new year  we also welcome the winter! This the season for citrus, soups, blankets, and all things that keep you warm. Reflection is another common theme for this part of the year. The long, extended nights encourage us indoors. This “hibernation” embraces subtleties of  stillness  and rest. This quietness guides the individual, or the soul, to go inwards too. What will a soul discover as it redirects its energy into the last unfurling tendrils of the year?  From an Ayurvedic perspective,  this time of year .balances between heavy kapha qualities and the company of vata. The increased rain and snow, and overall moisture, embodies a heaviness that the kapha season is most known for. Along with the heaviness, cold, and sometimes dry qualities (depending on your geographic location), intensify the ever moving vata. Bolstering your diet and lifestyle are essential so that you don’t fall into an excess or depletion in either of these do...

Balancing Vata & Kapha During Rainy Weather

Although we are still in Vata season until the early spring comes around, Kapha dosha has been present with this rainy weather. It is still cold and windy, but moist & wet have momentarily replaced the dry quality of Vata season . Vata and Kapha are opposites and we often use the qualities of Vata to balance Kapha and vice versa. We can make intuitive decisions and look at the few similarities of these doshas to live in harmony with the seasons. So how do we keep a balance when both of these doshas are elevated? Lets compare Vata and Kapha: Vata :  ether + air. Gunas (qualities):  dry, light, mobile, cold, rough, subtle, clear Kapha :  water + earth. Gunas:  moist, heavy, cold, slow, oily, liquid, smooth, dense, soft, static, cloudy, hard, gross Vata and Kapha both are cold, so the first thing we can do the pacify this dosha is to stay warm! Staying warm refers to clothing, food, spices, exercise and meal times. Keep the head and neck warm with a scarf and hat a...

Life is hard. Every day it seems like a new challenge appears to test your patience. You may not realize that chronic stress can also lead to long-term health complications. When you need something in a pinch, however, other herbs and  essential oils  – like lavender oil – can ease symptoms almost instantly. 1...
